LinkAware

What is it?

LinkAware is a free browser extension that we developed to help people recognize where they are when they surf the web. Knowing where you are on the web is a crucial part of avoiding phishing scams. In phishing scams, people are often directed to falsified websites where their login credentials or other personal information is stolen. We’ve come up with a solution: a browser extension that displays the website you’re visiting without all of the extra parts of the URL.

If you know someone who is likely to enter their login information on a fake website, share this browser extension with them.

How to Get It

You can add this extension from your favorite browser's app store. Supported browsers are listed below.
  • Chrome

Why the Broad Permissions?

Before you install this browser extension, you'll be asked to accept its permissions, and yes, it seems to have full access to each page you visit! Unfortunately, in order to place a temporary banner at the top of websites with the URL information, we had to design LinkAware this way. Our original version of LinkAware used notifications to avoid asking for extensive browser permissions, but the overall result was less than ideal. Each browser has a review process for submitted extensions, especially when it asks for broad permissions, and LinkAware has passed those reviews. Rest assured that we do NOT collect any browsing history or data from websites you visit. This extension is simply meant to be a tool to help people understand where they are on the internet.
